There was a time when canvas messenger bags were seen as deeply uncool and decidedly unfashionable. Lately, however, they have undergone a remarkable revival and are now seen in many places as being very fashionable indeed. They are most popular among students who have quite a few books and often laptop computers to carry about. The attraction for many of them is that canvas bags are pretty rugged but also quite cheap. Often they will cost about one-tenth as much as it would cost to buy a mid-range leather messenger bag.
Canvas is also relatively hard wearing and sturdy. Now don’t think that you will get a lifetime of wear out of it, but you should get a good few years, even if you are carrying lots of heavy books about.
They also have a much more casual and retro look than that of more modern bags made from synthetic materials.
Another reason for their recent revival is that they are seen as having green credentials among the ecologically conscious. This is because canvas is made from natural products rather than from synthetic substances that are derived from oil.
The most basic versions are simply the olive green sorts that are direct descendants of the paratrooper style or army style messenger bags that served in the Second World War and in the Korean War. There are simple and sturdy with broad straps for comfortable carry.
More modern versions have also proliferated in recent years that are designed with today’s students in mind. They will have more compartments and the like as well as additional protection and waterproofing so that you can safely carry a laptop computer without worry about it getting destroyed the first time your bag gets plunked down a little too hard or gets splashed in the rain.
It is not just students who are behind the revival of vintage canvas bags. High fashion houses are also bringing them back into style with variations being seen on the catwalk at various fashion shows over the past year or two.
