Last summer I got married on the Gold Coast in Australia, and had planned what should have been the perfect beach wedding.  However, things didn’t really turn out to how I had wanted them to, and in fact the dream soon transpired to be a nightmare.  The reason?  I bought a cheap beach wedding dress online in what has to be the worst online purchase of my life.  Here’s my story of why you should avoid buying cheap beach wedding dresses at all costs.

My story starts in February of 2010 when my boyfriend proposed to me.  We soon planned our dream wedding that was to take place on the beach.  The last year has been very financially tight so we decided that we would try and cut some costs – a decision I regret today.  I wish I had listened to my mother who told me not to buy a cheap beach wedding dress – but that’s exactly what I did.

I decided that I wanted a short design that was backless.  The reason being that I thought this would be practical on the beach given the fact it would be really hot come my wedding day in October.  After visiting various bridal stores in my home town I settled on a design that I liked, but it was completely out of my price range.

Instead I heard about wedding dress makers based in China who will take photos of a designer wedding dress and promise to faithfully reproduce it to your size and specification at a fraction of the cost.  Well it didn’t really turn out that way – cheap beach wedding dresses might be cheap coming out of China, but what turned up on my door step was a far cry from the photos and details I had sent them.

I might have well as chosen from those large wedding maternity dresses that you see pregnant brides wear.  The cheap beach wedding dress was so big for me it was laughable.  Plus there was a tear down one side from where it had become damaged in transit.  The wedding dress I had was almost impossible to use, and although it cost half of what I would have paid at home, it was just not usable.

Luckily my mother found a highly skilled dress maker locally who was able to rescue the situation.  But I was still not, and to this day, am still unhappy.  You can see it in my photographs too, I just look sad.  My advice to you is never buy cheap beach wedding dresses – it is just not worth the trouble.
